Bodyweight Change Targets
The Point
- Bodyweight targets help match the current pace of change to the current goal.

The Reason
Bodyweight change is not just about direction. The speed of change matters too.
If weight is dropping too slowly during a fat loss phase, the plan may not be creating enough of a deficit to produce meaningful progress. If weight is dropping too quickly, the process may become harder to recover from, harder to sustain, and more likely to interfere with training performance.
If weight is increasing too slowly during a muscle gain phase, there may not be enough support for consistent growth. If weight is increasing too quickly, more of the gain is likely to come from body fat instead of useful lean mass.
That is why the goal is not simply “lose weight” or “gain weight.”
The goal is to move at a rate that fits the preferred outcome.
These targets also need to be read through averages. A single weigh-in can jump or drop because of food volume, water, sodium, digestion, soreness, stress, sleep, or training fatigue.
Average weekly change gives a cleaner signal.
For example, comparing your current 7-day average to your previous 7-day average is almost always more useful than comparing today’s weigh-in to yesterday’s weigh-in.

Fat Loss
The slower end of the range is often better when you want the process to feel more sustainable, training performance matters, hunger is already high, stress is elevated, or the fat loss phase needs to last longer.
A slower rate can also reduce the pressure to make aggressive nutrition changes. The tradeoff is that progress takes more patience, and the trend may take longer to become obvious.
The faster end can be useful for short, defined pushes when there is a clear deadline or when faster progress is worth the tradeoff.
The tradeoff is that a faster rate is more aggressive. It can increase hunger, make the process more mentally demanding, reduce training performance, challenge recovery, and increase the risk of losing muscle if it is pushed too hard or too long.
Muscle Gain
The slower end usually helps keep the gain cleaner. It can be a better fit if you are already fairly trained, want to limit unnecessary fat gain, or are trying to stay within a tighter bodyweight range.
The tradeoff is that the trend can be harder to see, and progress may feel slower week to week.
The faster end can be useful when gaining is the clear priority, you have more room to add bodyweight, training performance needs more support, or you struggle to gain weight consistently.
The tradeoff is that faster gain usually brings a higher chance of extra body fat gain. It may also shorten how long you can keep pushing before needing to slow down, maintain, or clean things up.
Recomposition And Maintenance
Bodyweight may move up or down slightly, but it should not clearly run away in either direction unless the goal changes.
For recomposition, bodyweight may stay fairly stable while training performance, measurements, photos, and body composition improve.
For maintenance, bodyweight should stay near your recent average without drifting too far up or down.
Keep The Goal In View
The target is not about forcing the scale to behave perfectly every week.
The target is about keeping the trend aligned with the goal.
Common Misreads
- “I lost 1% from yesterday, so I’m at the top of the fat loss range.” No. These targets refer to average weekly changes, not one-day changes.
- “Faster fat loss is always better.” Not always. Faster fat loss comes with more tradeoffs and usually works best as a short push with a defined deadline.
- “Slow fat loss means the plan is not working.” Not necessarily. Slow fat loss can be the right call when sustainability, performance, recovery, or adherence matter more.
- “Bulking means I should gain as fast as possible.” No. Faster weight gain can support training, but it also increases the likelihood of unnecessary fat gain.
- “A clean bulk means the scale barely moves.” Not exactly. If gaining muscle is the goal, the trend usually needs to move up at some point.
- “Maintenance means the scale never changes.” No. Maintenance means the trend stays within a reasonable range over time.
- “Recomposition means bodyweight has to stay exactly the same.” Not exactly. Recomposition can happen with a stable, slightly rising, or slightly falling trend depending on the person and the plan.
Exceptions
Your coach may adjust these targets based on your starting point, training age, body composition, performance goals, recovery, stress, appetite, health history, timeline, and how well the current plan is working.
Your coach may also adjust the target during travel, illness, high-stress periods, unusually hard training blocks, digestive disruption, menstrual cycle changes, or any period where bodyweight data is temporarily less reliable.
In those cases, the goal is still to match the rate of change to the outcome instead of chasing the fastest possible scale movement.
